In 2016, a group of actors met to figure out how they, as theater artists, could be better advocates for social justice. The organization they created, the Broadway Advocacy Coalition, received a special Tony Award on Sept. 26. The whole thing is surreal for BAC president Britton Smith, who will be accepting the award.
“This award is evidence that moving forward requires calling out. It requires saying that it’s not enough to have an all-white team and one Black person on the team. It requires raising the standard, it requires using power and influence. I’ve been thinking about power and change and where it lives and where it comes from, and it’s in this room right here.” -Britton Smith
